DISEASE: Bacterial blight and bacterial leaf streak

HOST: Rice

Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola (bacterial leaf streak) causes water-soaked streaks with yellow ooze (left side), and X. oryzae pv. oryzae (bacterial blight) causes brown streaks that have turned white (right side).

Early symptoms are minute, pale green spots on young leaves. Later, small pustules form in the center of spots, best observed on underside of leaves. Spots vary in size and darken with age and lesions coalesce. Dead areas are torn away by wind.

Brown, desiccated seedlings in nursery exhibiting basal chlorosis and withering of second and third leaves.

Dead seedlings in half of nursery tray. Symptoms are basal chlorosis and withering of second and third leaves. Infected seedlings become reddish brown and desiccated in time.
